How to connect Polygon Network to MetaMask? This article will introduce a step-by-step guide to connect Polygon Network to MetaMask.

MetaMask and Polygon Network are the two reputable names in the crypto space. In this tutorial, we will introduce you to MetaMask and Polygon, and how to add Polygon to MetaMask.

About Metamask and Polygon Network

What is MetaMask?

MetaMask, owned by ConsenSys, is a crypto wallet used to interact with the Ethereum blockchain, available for users as a web browser extension and a mobile wallet. As a crypto gateway, MetaMask can be used to connect to other blockchains besides Ethereum.

In November 2021, MetaMask surpassed the 21M Monthly Active Users milestone, making it the most popular Ethereum-based wallet. Later on, in March 2022, it raised $450M in a Series D round, valuing it at $7B.

Notable features of MetaMask:

  • Friendly and easy-to-use UI.
  • Easy to interact with other supported Dapps.
  • An in-app DEX aggregator that allows users to swap ERC20 tokens natively.
  • Data is owned by users who hold the passphrase.

What is Polygon Network?

Polygon is known as Ethereum's Internet of Blockchains. It acts as a framework for connecting Ethereum-compatible chains. Polygon solves the scalability problem of Ethereum when the cost and time for each transaction on Ethereum are incredibly high.

We may also hear about the “Internet of Blockchain” concept from other chains such as Polkadot, Cosmos, and Avalanche. But unlike these Layer-1 chains, Polygon is the side-chain of Ethereum, so Polygon fully benefits from the network effect of Ethereum.

The Polygon blockchain uses MATIC as the native token, serving as the gas fee (the fee you need to pay to the network).

Highlights of the Polygon Network:

  • One of the most vibrant blockchain platforms in terms of number of dApps.
  • Polygon is an EVM-compatible blockchain that has a huge community of developers and integrates with various scaling solutions.
  • Polygon raised up to $450 million through a private sale of their MATIC token, marking it as a major milestone for the Network as the largest funding round since the project’s founding in 2017.

Since Polygon is an EVM-compatible blockchain, it can be connected via MetaMask. Using MetaMask lets users interact with Dapps on Polygon such as QuickSwap to swap tokens.

Furthermore, Coin98 Super App also supports Polygon Network. You can create PRC-20 wallets on the Coin98 Super App.

MetaMask's Supported Browsers

This article will introduce how to connect Metamask to Polygon Network on the web browser, Chrome.

Step 1: Installing MetaMask Wallet

  1. Go to metamask.io/download
  2. Click “Install MetaMask for Chome” to download the extension.
  3. Install MetaMask to Chrome and create a MetaMask wallet.
  4. Log in to your MetaMask wallet.

After MetaMask has been installed, you'll see this as the default user interface. Don't forget to store the passphrase someplace safe and secret so that you can recover the wallet if you forget the password.

Note: Passwords and paraphrases should never be shared or revealed to anyone.

Step 2: Connecting Metamask to Polygon

After logging in, MetaMask will set the Ethereum blockchain as default. To switch to using Polygon on MetaMask, we will walk you through the following steps.

At the top left corner of the MetaMask interface, select “Ethereum Mainnet” to drop down the menu, then click the “Add Network” button.

Add Network With MetaMask

The web will direct you to the Settings page, where you can add a blockchain network. We will manually add the Polygon mainnet to MetaMask as we first use MetaMask. We just switch Polygon to other blockchains at hand in later usage.

Polygon Mainnet:

  • Network Name: Polygon Network
  • New RPC URL: https://polygon-rpc.com/
  • ChainID: 137
  • Symbol: MATIC
  • Block Explorer URL: https://polygonscan.com/

Fill in the network details and click Save.

You successfully connect Polygon to MetaMask. Import your PRC-20 wallet, and now your PRC-20 tokens are displayed.

Step 3: Switching between blockchains on MetaMask

In the previous steps, you are introduced to connecting Polygon to MetaMask. If you prefer to connect to other blockchains, click “Polygon Network” as in the picture below to select your network.
